Virtual Author Visits
I'm thrilled that you're interested in having me visit your school, library, or book club! Currently, I'm only offering virtual visits. With my background in education, I have years of experience working with children and teens in both formal and informal settings. I've developed presentations that are both engaging and informative for young audiences.
When you schedule a visit, I'll work with you to design a program that will resonate with your students. Here's what I have to offer:
-
Path to Publication (15 minutes)
-
I share my journey of publishing my debut, demystifying the process of traditional publication.
-
Great for the young writers in your English and creative writing classes!
-
-
Shop Talk (15 minutes)
-
Craft-specific talks where I share more about my writing process and provide exercises your students can use in their own writing.
-
Choose from:
-
Story Ghost (Characters): How to use backstory to create compelling characters. Includes information about character flaws and character arcs.
-
Story Ghost (Plot): How to use backstory to create compelling plots. Includes information about story structure.
-
Story Construction: Using the analogy of building a house, I share my process for how I write and revise my stories.
-
-
-
Empowering Allies (15 minutes)
-
We read one of my favorite passages from The Passing Playbook then I lead a discussion about what it means to be an ally. Perfect for LGBTQ+ Alliances!
-
-
Q&A
-
I answer your students' questions and may ask some of my own!
-
-

Not able to do a live virtual visit? No problem! Choose up to two programs above and I'll record a presentation up to 30 minutes. You'll receive the video via a private link that you can access at your convenience.

Tips to make the most of our visit
-
Make sure your students know who I am! They should at least know my name, my pronouns, and why I'm there.
-
Encourage students to come prepared with questions. You can also send them to me in advance.
-
Position the camera so I that can see your students.
-
Test your technology beforehand. Zoom often limits a guest's ability to share their screen.
-
During the visit, please continue your usual classroom management. If there are disruptions, don't hesitate to step in as needed. I don't mind pausing while you handle it.
-
You're welcome to take pictures. And if you do, please send them to me!
